From National Parks to Climate Change: Environmental Activism and Politics in the US

From the debates on how to preserve the western wilderness in the late 19th century via Earth Day in the 1970s all the way to modern discussions about climate change, environmental protection has been a constant topic in the US for well over a century. It has also been the source of much controversy. Environmental activism in the US follows its own traditions and directions and is often distinctly different from its European counterparts. How big is the role of environmental issues in American politics and what role can the US play in international efforts regarding climate change? This seminar will provide an overview. As usual, satirical cartoons, videos, and songs will help to shed light on these serious issues.
